What is a hydroponic system?

A hydroponic system is having the capability to grow any plant without using soil. The plants are anchored in a grow media which allows the plants to be suspended directly in a nutrient solution.

Different type of hydroponic systems

Flood and Drain

(Ebb & Flow)

Deep Water Culture

Aeroponic

Drip System

Flood and Drain

This method involves periodically flooding the plants with water that is filled with various nutrients to allow the water to flow across each plant’s roots freely and is drained back into the reservoir to be recycled back into the system and repeats this cycle throughout the day.

Deep Water Culture

This system has each plant housed in a net pot that is submerged in a reservoir that contains various nutrients, which is constantly recirculated with an airstone providing proper oxygen.

Aeroponic

In an Aeroponic system, the plants are supported in a grow media while the roots are  suspended in the air. This allows a sprinkler system to feed the roots of the plants by misting the root zone with the nutrient solution. Since the roots are suspended in the air, this allows the roots to absorb plenty of oxygen without the use of an airstone.

Drip System

The drip system uses a pump to feed each plant with a nutritious water supply, and It uses a trickle irrigation system. This type of method is most popular among commercial growers since its more efficient on a larger scale. This system prevents over watering and feeding as well.
